2 branch of the Linux kernel, and some versions of the 2.

Alan Cox is an Open Source Technologist in Intel’s Open Source Technology Center working on Linux kernel development. 4 branch. He has also been involved in the GNOME and X. He has been heavily involved in the development of the Linux kernel since its early days in 19 91, and he spent about 10 years working at Red Hat prior to joining Intel. Org projects, and was the main develo per of AberMUD. Alan maintained the 2.

Dawn: What do you like about working in Intel’s Open Source Technology Center (OTC)?

Dawn: How has your work on the Linux kernel changed since you joi ned Intel earlier this year?

Dawn: I see that you are also a model train enthusiast.

Can you tell us more about your involvement in model trains?

Dawn: Why did you decide to go back to go back school to get an MBA a few years ago?

Alan: I spent a lot of time trying to stop all sorts of other parts of companies I worked for and people I was involved with from doing mind-numbingly stupid things in the free software world even when told it would end in tears.

Over time it became apparent that I needed to be able to understand what their frame of reference was and how to explain things to them in terms we all understood in order not only to tell them they are about to do something that isn’t a good idea but to help them figure out what the right answer is.

In part that is because a lot of what I am doing in Intel has been helping review code for engineers which they will work on and release themselves as well as looking at things and reporting into Intel rather than outwards. Having a large number of Intel engineers up to speed on Linux has a long lasting payoff both for Intel and Linux. Alan: The public side hasn’t changed much I think. I see helping teach Intel engineers about Linux styles and mentality as a really important goal.

The nearest to “not my problem” in Intel seems to be “Allow me to introduce you to the person who handles this”. There is a real “can do” approach and people all seem willing both to tackle problems and help other people do so.

I like the attitude within Intel. Alan: Joining Intel was a bit of a leap into the dark, and initially it’s a very conf using place because of the size.

It ties in to the computing side in designing the art work that produces the models but it is mostly about creating things. Alan: I design and make parts for producing small models out of brass. It’s a magic that software just doesn’t have.

There is something very special about working materials by hand using craft skills to turn raw materials into a real world creation.

InfoWorld recently recognized the top 36 most important open source software projects that h ave withstood the test of time. These are the projects that have shaped the way that we use many technologies today. I’ve mentioned before that I was a Unix sys admin in the mid-1990s, so this article brought back a lot of memories for me.

GNU tools and utilities. vi debate. Then there is always the Emacs vs. I was always a big fan of GCC, and it was one of the first things I would install on a new Unix box (from source, because that’s the way real admins installed software).

I’m a vi kind of girl, and I still use vi to edit system files on my Mac, mostly out of habit.

One of the best things about being a sys admin was playing with all kinds of network protocols. I learned so much about the underlying technologies behind the internet in just a couple of years.

Networking. I got to administer our companies DNS servers running BIND, but more importantly, I helped set up and administer a rogue corporate email server (Sendmail and Pop3). People would wander into my cubicle whispering about email, and I’d get them set up with their secret email account. Our company at the time (1995 or 1996, I think) used the mainframe for all email, which was les s than optimal for the people using PCs or Unix within the company, so we set up a rogue email server and diver ted their email at the firewall to hit the Unix Sendmail server, instead of the mainframe.

as a side effect of doing some minor work on Wordpress installs and other web applications. I only talked about a few of the many projects on the InfoWorld list that brought back the most memories for me, but plenty of other great software was also on the list: various Linux / BSD distros, Asterisk,, OpenSSH / OpenSSL, VNC, PostgreSQL Perl, Python, Ruby, Wine, Samba, Cygwin and more. I still play around with a few other things on their list, like Apache, MySQL, PHP, etc.

What’s the story behind your favorite open source software project of all ti me?

With Gartner putting virtualization in the number 1 spot of their Top 10 Stra tegic Technologies for 2009, virtualization has been getting quite a bit of attention. I tend to think about server virtualization, which is where most of the buzz has been, but part of Gartner’s reason for putting it at the top of the list is because they also see virtualization in storage and client devices growing rapidly along with server virtualization.

However, many users will probably just use the defaul t virtualization solution from their operating system vendor. VMWarerecently announced that it has released a virtual desktop client into open source in addition to it’s other virtualization products. There are plenty of examples of virtualization solutions being offered by the operating system vendors: Microsoft, Red Hat, Sun or others. There are plenty of open source virtualization offerings available to choose from, including Xen and KVM.

“In a report from April (PDF link), IDC sa ys that people who use Linux now will continue to deploy increased numbers of virtualized Linux instances and expand their use of Linux in these virtualized environments. Sam Dean describes a couple of virtualization trends on the OStatic blog: “1) open source virtualization offerings; and 2) free virtualization within operating systems. Here are a couple of additional virtualization trend data points:

IDC also sees virtualization as a hot trend in the industry, and they see Linux playing a big role.

This kind of competition fosters innovation as the various vendors compete to have the best solution. The key is that there are plenty of options to choose from depending on exactly what you need from your virtualization solution. The open source virtualization vendors face plenty of competition from the operating system vendors and other solutions.

Ev en large enterprises are using ope n source management applications. Open source management applications have been getting a fair amount of attention over the past few months, and it isn’t just the startups and smaller businesses using them.

In this blog post, I wanted to cover some other recent news from a couple of general purpose open source management applications used to manage diverse environments. Just last week, I blogged about Canonical’s plans for their Landscape Dedicated Server designed to make it easier for companies to manage Ubuntu deployments.

It isn’t just the vendors talking about open source management tools. On May, 26th Forrester released a study about Open Source IT Management Tools that focuses on their use within enterprises of all sizes. Network World did a pretty good job of covering this report if you want more details, but here’s a quick quote from the Network World article:

Zenoss is another open source management application, and according to Michael Cote from RedMonk, “Zenoss has worked since 2005 to develop an open source IT management stack that excels in monitoring a data center’s infrastructure layer. ” They released a new version of their Zenoss Core and Zenoss Enterprise with some new features and improvements in June 2009. It works across a company’s entire infrastructure to make sure all systems and apps are performing at their peak. Lisa Hoover from OStatic calls Zenoss Enterprise “a Swiss Army Knife of assorted monitoring tools. “

According to their press release new features included: Normalization of Metrics Across Heterogeneous Technologies, Scalable Secure Monitoring of Linux/Unix Servers, Monitoring of Internal or External Web Services, VMware vSphere 4 Support,, and mor e.

Fortunately, the open source alternative exists and this is the program called Scribus, an application platform, clear and intuitive, which enables those who are accustomed to using such software, to be immediately productive.
Scribus is quite rich in terms of functionality: it can manage master pages, color profiles, and different templates depending on the structure of the page. Among the major limitations of the suite OpenOffice. org, one must observe the lack of a simple desktop publishing, as the excellent Microsoft Publisher.
Includes automatic hyphenation feature
