Hopefully this latest outing by Motorola won’t end up in flames as it would be ironic to have such a prophetic name for a handset. Other specifications and details are still scant at time of publishing, but we know that this won’t be a high end handset so don’t get your hopes up that this will displace the iPhone as the hottest phone on the market. Verizon is first in line to release a new cell phone from Motorola known as Inferno, while other circles have gone about calling it the Torch.

Word has it Verizon will begin hardware trials sometime this week, and a notable cosmetic change would be the removal of the plastic flip.

The underlying operating system is able to resize everything to fit into its display, although there will be some issues with third party software titles.

Asus is the name synonymous with netbooks these days, and it is hard to believe that the past two years have seen significant leaps in terms of netbook technology from the humble Eee PC 701 that came with a 7″ display and just 4GB of internal memory to boot, alongside a frighteningly short battery life. The back is free from ports or slots for a more aesthetically pleasing design, although we think this might not bode well for folks who prefer to plug in peripherals like mice from the back so that there will be more space available on the desk. Fast forward to today and we have the Asus Eee PC 1000HE that hopes to pummel the competition into submission.

Touchpad
I have difficulty with the sensitivity of the touchpad though, despite the fact that it looks really sweet surrounded by metal left and right buttons. Too bad the 1000HE does not come with a VGA cable, so you’ll need to pick that up from a computer hardware shop somewhere else.

 Conclusion
The Asus Eee PC 1000HE is a formidable netbook by its own accord, and it certainly is one of the better ones out there in the market currently. 3 megapixel camera that comes in handy when you want to hold a video conversation with your friends and family over an Instant Messaging program such as Skype and MSN Messenger among others. 0 ports and a VGA port just in case you are office bound and would want to work with a larger monitor. After all that is one of the main marketing points for the 1000HE, so that’s where, we will begin.

As for the keyboard itself, it takes on the new “chiclet” design that seems to be all the rage these days, whether they are meant for notebooks or netbooks. There is a drawback to the 6-cell battery though – it means a heavier load to lug around, but by virtue of it being a netbook, you won’t breach the 2kg mark so don’t worry about burdening those shoulders of yours. 0 port, a headphone and microphone jack, an Ethernet port and a Kensington lock slot. Most of the time, first timers will probably run into snags with the right Shift key due to the much shorter design, and you can forget about looking for dedicated Home, End, Page Down and Page Up keys since they all fall under the arrow keys area that requires one to hold down the Function key beforehand. Here’s a hat tip though – Firefox 3. Well, it comes with the new Intel Atom N280 1. Overall, the learning curve of using the keyboard isn’t steep, and you might even find it to be rather enjoyable after a while. As for left side of the netbook, you will find the third USB 2. Well, they sure weren’t kidding by claiming it to be one of the longest lasting netbooks in the market as the 6-cell battery could last for up to 8 hours (in my experience anyways) without any wireless connectivity turned on and with a low screen brightness setting while running just a couple of programs like StarOffice and Notepad. You will be able to use the quick acc ess bu ttons to perform a variety of tasks including turning the monitor off (but the 1000HE still does not enter standby mode, mind you) in order to conserve battery life, changing resolutions on-the-fly without having to go through the usual Windows settings, switch between various power management modes as well as boot up Skype. If only the display’s resolution could be improved upon. There are several gestures to learn up with this touchpad in order to make your life much easier while you’re on the go without a mouse in tow, but as mentioned before, there is the sensitivity issue which could frustrate users, especially those who require precision movement and placement of the cursor in their line of work. 66GHz processor, for starters which is faster and more energy efficient that the N270 hence allowing it to last much longer compared to regular netbooks.
Design
The Eee PC 1000HE takes up the maximum allowable size as agreed with Microsoft – featuring a 10″ display that has a resolution of 1,024 x 600, just like any other netbook its size. ). A quick check with the manual, however, reveals that these two keys are actually User-defined Keys that can be programmed according to your whims and fancies. 3 megapixel webcam and an additional 10GB of free Eee Storage capability where you are able to access these files remotely from anywhere in the world – as long as there is an Internet connection. Strangely enough, the last two quick access keys (power management mode switching and booting up Skype) have the same icon printed above the keys, so it could lead to some confusion there. On the right side of it you will find a 4-in-1 memory card reader, a couple of USB 2.

 Connectivity Options
You won’t find yourself shortchanged with the Eee PC 1000HE when it comes to connectivity, that’s for sure. Let me warn you first – if you are a newbie to the world of netbooks, you will find it rather hard to get used to the netbook keyboard at first, but as mother used to say – practice makes perfect! What makes the 1000HE different from most of the other netbooks in the market?

 Battery Life
How does the Eee PC 1000HE stack up against the rest of the competition when it comes to battery life? 0 runs much faster than Internet Explorer 7/8 on the Eee PC 1000HE (and any other machines for that matter, tee hee! I like the way the 1000HE’s lid closes – with a rather solid thud, sending the netbook to standby mode there and then without having to hear a “click” sound that is normally associated with larger (and older) notebooks.

 Keyboard and access buttons
Since the 1000HE is already extremely short on space, it makes perfect sense to throw in a bunch of quick access buttons in order to maximize the functionality of the device. Apart from the phenomenally long battery life, other outstanding features are the digital array microphones for crystal clear communication, an integrated 1. The top part of the netbook when closed is a certified fingerprint magnet, but how else are you going to include a touch of class in your device without having it pick up any fingerprints in the process? This is phenomenal by previous netbook standards, and once you’re used to such long battery life, chances are you will be averse to other netbooks that won’t be able to outlast the 1000HE. Overall an excellent choice for a first netbook. Just don’t expect too much out of its processor if you haven’t used a netbook before, as this is meant to be a machine that does well for casu al Web surfing and office productivity software. On top of the glossy display is a 1.

The device can be tracked via a web interface, and has many more features. $250 from Xacttechnology. GPS Tracking devices only do one thing: broadcast their own GPS location at all times, period. It can also be left in an OFF state and turn itselfON upon a shock or a pull on its handle. Xact goes one step beyond. For example, they could use its GPS or its GPRS datalink for their computer. The best one: no subscription fee. First of all, users can benefit from its hardware in conjunction with other devices.

This will clearly usher in a new age of web applications, turning them into even more intensive and sophisticated software which will more or less be closer to native apps. Operating systems are getting more and more sophisticated as hardware becomes more powerful, so it is no surprise to see Google’s Chrome OS to feature their very own O3D plug-in that allows browsers to use hardware-accelerated 3D graphics. We wonder whether netbooks will have enough processing and graphical firepower to handle such operating systems in the near future.

in an effort to provide software-based low-cost GPS suitable for mass-market mobile phones and personal navigation devices.

CSR (Cambridge Silicon Radio) will apply its own experience in embedding radio technologies into the mobile platform and expects its first autonomous and assisted GPS product offerings to be available during the first half of 2007 expecting its cost to fall under $1 per unit of overall bill of materials when used with CSR’s Bluetooth. CSR of Cambridge, UK, announced January 15 that it has acquired NordNav Technologies AB and Cambridge Positioning Systems Ltd.

CSR acquired the two companies to bring together solutions to the hurdles inherent in delivering smaller, lower cost, and less power-hungry GPS units for handsets. “

“There are also performance restrictions in terms of both handset and network that have meant that the technology is not appropriate for the mobile platform. “At $5 to $10, current GPS solutions are too expensive and just not practical for mainstream cellphone applications,” said Matthew Phillips of CSR’s Mobile Handset Connectivity strategic business unit. The two acquisitions mean that CSR has removed the barriers for mobile handset makers and operators to provide location-based services for the mass market.

CPS provides extended GPS software algorithms for mobile handsets and network-server software that allow users to achieve a fast location fix (less than 3 seconds), and also provide GPS coverage in dense urban areas and indoors.

CSR acquired, Cambridge Positioning Systems, also based in Cambridge for $35 million cash. The faster fix means that, in comparison to conventional assisted GPS, power can be reduced by a factor of 10 or more.

The software GPS technology acquired from NordNav will take up 80 percent less area than competing hardware solutions. NordNav has already successfully implemented an embedded software receiver for mobile – GPS positioning with an operational performance as good as industry-standard hardwarecentric implementations. NordNav, based in Sweden, was acquired for an initial cash consideration of $40 million, with a further cash consideration of up to $35 million payable subject to future performance objectives being met by NordNav.

CSR’s GPS technology will support the Galileo standard and will demo at the 3GSM Congress in Barcelona.

More than 40 employees have transferred to CSR from NordNav and CPS.

Both NordNav and CPS were private companies, principally owned by venture capital, and both have substantial patented intellectual property.

It is routinely not a replication-type approach. All the noise surrounding continuous data protection (CDP) has been escalating since the term was first rolled out last fall at Storage Networking World. But one of the consistent sounds that rise above the noise is the warning that CDP is not a disaster recovery solution.

The two modules include:

It also offers a replacement value, in that it is possible to do without a variety of hardware and software products that usually need to be bundled for synchronous and asynchronous replication, snapshotting and disk-based CDP. It is certainly a cost-conscious solution, with storage and bandwidth cost advantages built in.

CDP alone doesn’t address disaster recovery, meaning it does not provide protection in the event of the loss of a site. To address this need, CDP can be supplemented either by replication or by traditional backup with off-site tape protection.

But by melding CDP with Kashya’s already reliable replication capability, it is possible to recover to an alternate site as well as recover to specific points in time. CDP solutions typically do not protect against site failure, probably the major weakness in the technology.

Kashya is already an established player in the replication space but the new appliance takes them deeper into the increasingly sophisticated world of data protection

The appliance offers CDP, in one active module and remote/local replication in another. To my knowledge, this is the only single, fully-integrated solution available. But the KBX5000 from Kashya (San Jose, CA) unites both worlds.

* The KBX5000 CDP module eliminates the risky and time consuming tasks needed to backup to and recover from tape and allows recovery with no data loss and recovery time objectives (RTOs) in minutes instead of hours or days. It maintains journals of all data changes at a local and/or remote site and enables immediate recovery to any point-in-time.

Continuous data protection uses disk technology to continuously capture updates to data in real time or near real time.

Primary result Backup windows become irrelevant because: backup is occurring all the time. Secondary result: Files can be available at spinning-disk speeds.

Unlike most CDP solutions that have no disaster recovery component, Kashya’s KBX5000 CRR (continuous remote replication) module offers the same any point in time recovery and complete protection from site disasters with no distance limitations.

Although CDP solutions are unlikely to replace traditional backup and recovery strategies in the near term, Kashya’s new appliance brings the day nearer with an effective one-two punch. Let your TCO analysis tell you the rest.

One: a CDP engine. Two: DR capability via replication.
