Apple Store Offers Contract-Free iPhone

Just as suspected, the 8GB model will retail for $599 while the 16GB model costs another Benjamin more. All these purchases can be activated via iTunes.
Whereas AT&T already offers such a deal, folks who want to go through that channel had to rely on a limit of one per customer, while Apple doesn’t really care how many units you pick up as they laugh their way to the bank. Unfortunately, you’re still stuck with AT&T if you don’t want to unlock your phone (and void your warranty). Folks who want to pick up an iPhone as a standalone unit without the hassle of being tied down to a 2-year contract will be able to do so via the Apple Store.
